Unitarian Church of Sânvăsii
About Unitarian Church of Sânvăsii
Sânvăsii (Nyárádszentlászló in Hungarian) is a Székely village in the Niraj Valley, about 17 km from Târgu Mureș. Its name comes from Saint Ladislaus, the king of Hungary canonised in 1192, to whom the hilltop church was dedicated in the Middle Ages; the village appears in the papal tithe lists of 1332. After the Reformation, around 1580, the church passed to the Unitarian community, which still uses it today.
Beneath the present church, archaeological excavations in 2009 found the traces of two earlier buildings: a large three-aisled church from the end of the 12th century, probably left unfinished, and a smaller one from the 13th century. The Gothic building of today dates from the 14th century and keeps Romanesque elements in the chancel. It was rebuilt in the 1490s, and the tower went up at that time, with a timber top storey, a rare solution today. The large bell, cast in 1498, is still in place.
The church stands on the mound in the middle of the village, in the cemetery, behind a plank fence, with a tiled roof over the nave and shingles on the chancel and the tower.
What you can see
The main attraction is the late Gothic frescoes in the chancel and on the chancel arch, dated 1496–1497: apostles among rich plant ornament, the busts of the wise and foolish virgins and, on the chancel vault, Christ in a mandorla, framed by medallions of saints. The painting in the nave was lost in the 18th-century reconstruction. Between 2009 and 2015 older frescoes also came to light, among them a scene that may show the Crucifixion.
The interior keeps painted pews from 1694, the pulpit crown and the communion table from 1784, a ceiling of unpainted boards and an organ from 1841. Beneath the tower, in the vaulted room, lies the tombstone of Sigér Mátyás, who died in 1586, from the family that patronised the church.
