About Cuza Vodă House in Galați

The house on Alexandru Ioan Cuza Street was built in the early nineteenth century by the parents of the future ruler, Ioan and Sultana Cuza, and Alexandru Ioan Cuza lived here in childhood and youth and later as pârcălab (local governor) of Galați. The year of construction varies by source (the press gives 1827, when Cuza's father was pârcălab). The house was later sold several times and put to various uses. In 1937 the "Casa Cuza Vodă" Association was formed, bought it by public subscription, and on 24 January 1939 the museum of the same name opened here, the first in Galați.

Today the house is a branch of the "Paul Păltănea" History Museum. After almost seven years of consolidation and restoration, largely with European funds, it reopened on 24 January 2024, on the 165th anniversary of the Union of the Principalities. The works included strengthening the monument, new display cases and panels, marble floors, lighting, climate control and surveillance.

Don't miss
  • The permanent exhibition on Alexandru Ioan Cuza, in the house where he lived.
  • Galați between 1850 and 1930, as a commercial and cultural centre, in new display cases and panels.
  • The bust of Cuza in the garden of the house, a historic monument in its own right.
  • The story of the oldest museum in Galați, founded in 1939.
