About Șipote Waterfall
At a glance: Waterfalls in Sălciua de Jos, Alba County. Opening hours: daily open 24 hours. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 2½ – 3 hours. Information verified on 4 October 2026.
Șipote Waterfall is not a single drop but a short, steep stream on the northern slope of the Trascău Mountains, stepping down to the Arieș river between Sălciua de Jos and Poșaga. Its water gathers on the Bedeleu Plateau, a karst upland full of sinkholes and swallow holes at 1,100–1,200 m, disappears into the limestone and resurfaces a few hundred metres lower from three karst springs below the rock face. From there the stream is only about 800 m long and drops from around 700 m to 430 m.
What makes it special is the travertine: the spring water, rich in calcium carbonate, deposits it on moss and branches, so the streambed is built of steps and dams of porous rust-and-green stone that grow year after year. Along the way there are dozens of small falls and a few bigger ones, up to 15 m high, with travertine pools (rimstone dams) between them. The area lies within the Trascău Natura 2000 site.
What you can see
The last waterfall is right beside the DN75, where the road crosses the narrow-gauge railway: the water tumbles over a travertine wall and falls straight into the Arieș, and from the rest area by the road you can see it without setting foot on the mountain.
The upper cascades are reached on the red-cross trail from Sălciua de Jos, which climbs through forest and then across the Șipote meadow, with hay fields and thatched huts and the Bedeleu cliffs above. Along the way are the panels of the "Pietrele Vorbitoare" (Speaking Stones) nature trail, about limestone, water and life in the mountain villages. At the top the water runs in thin veils over moss-covered travertine steps, next to a large cleft in the rock; a few hundred metres away is the portal of the Poarta Zmeilor cave.
Good to know
The last stretch down to the upper cascades is a short, steep descent on slippery ground, and there is no water along the trail. The flow depends on rain and on snowmelt on the plateau: in spring the falls are full, by late summer they thin out, and in cold winters they freeze.

- Rules
You are in the Trascău Natura 2000 site: stay on the path, do not break or step on the travertine dams (they take decades to form and crumble easily), do not light fires and leave no litter. Wear hiking shoes with good grip for the steep, slippery descent at the end, and bring water from home, as there is none on the trail. The nearby Poarta Zmeilor cave can only be explored with climbing gear and experience.
