Apafi Castle in Dumbrăveni
About Apafi Castle in Dumbrăveni
The castle at Dumbrăveni (Ebesfalva in Hungarian, later Erzsébetváros) stands in the town centre, on Cuza Vodă Street, between Mediaș and Sighișoara. Gergely Apafi began it in 1552, on an estate joined to that of the Bethlen family, as a Renaissance residence with a square plan, four corner bastions, an inner courtyard and a water-filled moat. The wings were added one after another, which is why the plan is irregular. Prince of Transylvania Mihai Apafi I (reigned 1661–1690) lived here, and in his time the castle was rebuilt and strengthened.
After the Apafi line died out in 1713, the estate passed to the treasury, and in 1726 the castle was bought by the Armenian community, who had made the town an important trading centre. Over the following centuries it housed the tribunal, the jail and the archive, then a school and a boarding school, and parts of the fortifications were pulled down. Of the former complex, the north and east wings, part of the west wing and the south-east bastion survive.
The building belongs to the town. It was partly restored in the 2010s, and on 15 July 2010 the Museum Collection of Transylvanian Armenians opened here. In 2026 the town hall secured European funding for the first stage of restoration.
What you can see
From the street you see the long mass of the main building, with framed windows and a high roof, and the rounded corner bastion with its conical roof. The arched gateway leads to the inner courtyard, and stone sculptures, a lion among them, survive in the entrance passage. The collection on Transylvanian Armenians tells of the community's arrival, history, religion and daily life.
Good to know
The building is still a monument in decay, and the works of the first stage (bastion, vaulted cellar, the ruin in the west, courtyard, historic well) are scheduled to last until October 2029. The town hall does not publish visiting hours; access inside should be confirmed beforehand by phone.
