About Roman Fort at Titești
On Cazanului hill, about 800 m west of the village of Titești, at a spot called Cetate, the Romans built a stone fort in the 2nd century, most likely under Hadrian, on the Limes Alutanus, the frontier along the Olt valley of the province of Dacia Inferior. Its role was to watch the corridor that skirts the Cozia massif to the east and to control the road towards Transylvania. With the forts at Rădăcinești, Bivolari, Racovița and Copăceni it formed part of the additional defensive line along the Olt. Archaeological excavations began here in 1893, led by Pamfil Polonic.
The rectangular enclosure measured about 56.6 x 48.2 m, only 0.27 ha, and was built of stone bound with mortar, with a wall 1.5 m thick and buttresses on the inside. It had no corner towers, and its two gates, on the east and west sides, were flanked by stone spurs. The headquarters building was unusually small, a sign that a garrison of a few hundred soldiers with its own command was stationed here. Only a single construction phase has been identified.
What you can see
The site is open-air and modestly preserved: at ground level you can make out a rectangular rise in the earth that marks the enclosure, and the traces of the old archaeological digs. There are no tall walls or reconstructions, so the visit is worthwhile mainly for the place itself, a quiet hillside in Țara Loviștei, and for the story of the Roman frontier on the Olt. In the village of Titești you can also see a museum of Loviște village life, and the commune is home to a First World War Heroes' Cemetery.
