The Catholic bishopric of Transylvania was founded by King Stephen I of Hungary around 1009, with its seat at Alba Iulia. Of the first cathedral, an 11th-century basilica, only the foundations survive, marked today by a line of a different colour in the floor of the side aisles. The present building, much larger, began to replace it around 1200: a stone basilica with a nave and two aisles, a transept, two west towers and a tower over the crossing, 93 metres long.

It was struck many times: the Tatar invasion of 1241, the fire set by the Saxons in 1277, then the sieges around 1600. Each time it was rebuilt, and the phases can be read in the stone: the Romanesque nave, the Gothic choir of the late 13th century, the chapels of around 1500 and the Baroque pediment over the entrance. Between 1565 and 1715 it was a Protestant church; since 1716 it has again been a Catholic cathedral, today that of the Archbishop of Alba Iulia.

Don't miss
  • The funerary monuments of John Hunyadi and his son Ladislaus, in the south aisle.
  • The façade of the Lázói chapel of 1512, with carvings and coats of arms in the Italian Renaissance style.
  • The sarcophagi of Queen Isabella and John Sigismund in the Várdai chapel, next to the epitaph of the fortress's architect.
  • The Romanesque portal on the south side, once the bishops' entrance.
  • The view over the Alba Carolina Fortress from the platform of the south tower, almost 28 metres up.
