About Feldioara Fortress

Feldioara Fortress (Marienburg in German, Földvár in Hungarian) stands on a hill beside the Homorod river, in the village that gave it its name. In 1211 King Andrew II gave the area to the Teutonic Knights to halt Cuman raids, and Feldioara became the centre of their rule in the Burzenland until they were expelled in 1225. Of the Teutonic stone fortification only a fragment of wall survives, on the north-west side.

The fortress you see today is largely a peasant one, built in the first half of the 15th century by the local community after the Tatars (1241) and then the Turks (1430) had laid the settlement waste. A document of 1439 mentions the Saxons strengthening the "castrum". The walls, 6–7 m high, enclose an oval courtyard with the entrance on the south side, defended by towers. In 1457 Vlad the Impaler damaged it and the locals rebuilt it the same year. It later lost its military role and became a storage place for the Saxon community.

A ruin for many years, the fortress was restored between 2013 and 2017 with funds from Brașov County Council. The restorers conserved what was old, rebuilt the walls and the four towers as they looked in the 17th century, and used timber for the wall-walk so the new work can be told from the original. It has been open to visitors since, and is run by the Feldioara town hall.

Information verified on 13 October 2026.

Don't miss
  • A stroll along the timber gallery of the walls, with views over the Burzenland.
  • The outline of the chapel and Cistercian monastery, marked on the ground in the inner courtyard.
  • The rebuilt well in the courtyard, about 70 m deep according to local sources.
  • The contrast between the original north-west wall and the rest of the fortress, rebuilt in timber and brick.
