Bistrița Medieval Fortress (Coopers' Tower)
About Bistrița Medieval Fortress (Coopers' Tower)
Bistrița was one of the seven Saxon fortified towns of Transylvania, and a town that guarded the trade route to Moldavia. After the townspeople were granted the right to enclose their town with stone walls in the second half of the 15th century, a circuit with 18 towers and bastions, built at the guilds' expense, grew up around the centre, with a moat filled with water from the Bistrița river. Work went on until around 1545. In the 19th century, on orders from Vienna, the walls, gates and towers were almost entirely demolished.
Of the whole complex a single tower survives, the Coopers' Tower (Turnul Dogarilor, the tower of the barrel and cask makers), built and defended by the coopers' guild. It has four stone levels and is about 25 m tall, with a high tiled roof. Over the centuries it also served purposes other than military ones, including as a hospital and a shelter. Next to it stand sections of the town wall, with narrow firing slits.
Under the Castle Route programme, funded through the PNRR, the city hall consolidated and enhanced the tower and the wall fragments, created a cultural visiting trail with information boards and built an open-air summer theatre next to the tower. The works were declared complete in August 2026 and the tower opened to the public on 28 August 2026, after a long building site and archaeological research.
What you can see
The wall and tower can be seen from outside at any time, from Strada Dogarilor and Strada Ecaterina Teodoroiu in the historic quarter. From outside, the tower's white silhouette, with arched windows on the upper façade, contrasts with the rough stone wall beside it. The interior can be visited during a short schedule (see below), and around the tower is the summer theatre built under the project.
Good to know
This is not a complete fortress but a tower and a few stretches of wall: the rest of the fortification has gone. The tower was closed during the works of 2025–2026; the interior hours below come from a city hall document of August 2026 and are very short, so it is worth phoning the National Tourist Information Centre beforehand.
