About Sighișoara Citadel

At a glance: Fortresses and fortifications in Sighișoara, Mureș County. Opening hours: daily open 24 hours. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 2½ – 3 hours. Information verified on 22 September 2026.

Sighișoara Citadel crowns the Citadel Hill above the Târnava Mare valley and is one of the few fortified medieval towns in Europe that people still live in. It was founded by Saxon settlers, and its Latin name, Castrum Sex, appears in documents in 1280. Between the 14th and 17th centuries the townspeople ringed both terraces of the hill with a wall roughly 930 metres long, defended by 14 towers, each looked after by a craft guild.

Nine of the towers survive, together with the cobbled streets, the squares and over a hundred houses listed as historic monuments. Vlad Dracul, father of Vlad the Impaler, lived here from 1431 to 1436, and tradition holds that his son was born in the house on Citadel Square. In 1999 the historic centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a testament to the culture of the Transylvanian Saxons.

The citadel is explored on foot and is open at all hours; you only pay to enter the museums and the Church on the Hill.

Don't miss
  • The wooden figures of the Clock Tower's clock, one for each day of the week.
  • The view over the upper town's rooftops from the Clock Tower gallery.
  • The wooden Covered Staircase leading up to the Church on the Hill.
  • The 15th-century murals and the crypt of the Church on the Hill.
  • The Saxon cemetery on the hill and a walk past the surviving guild towers.
