About Colț Fortress

Colț Fortress stands on a wooded spur of rock more than 100 m above the Râușor valley, at the mouth of the gorge leading to the Retezat Mountains. It was built in the 14th–15th centuries by the Cândea knezes, a Romanian family from the Hațeg Country who were ennobled in the 15th century and gradually Magyarised under the name Kendeffy. Its core is a square tower house, later surrounded by an enclosure wall with towers that follows the shape of the rock.

The fortress was too small to hold out against an army and served rather as the family's residence and refuge. The Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi, who saw it in the 1660s, described a fortress with five corners and eleven towers, a single gate facing the Hațeg plain and slopes so steep that it could not be approached. It has been a ruin for more than two centuries, and the walls have never been restored.

Local tradition and several authors link it with Jules Verne's novel "The Carpathian Castle" (1892), seeing it as the model for the castle in the book; the connection remains a hypothesis. The fortress lies within the Hațeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark.

Information verified on 2 November 2026.
