About Rucăr–Bran Pass

At a glance: Scenic roads in Brașov County. Opening hours: daily open 24 hours. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 1 – 1½ hours. Information verified on 29 September 2026.

The Rucăr–Bran Pass (also called the Rucăr–Bran Corridor) is where the DN73 links the Muscel area of Argeș with the Bârsa Land around Brașov, between Rucăr and Bran: about 34 km of mountain road between Piatra Craiului to the west and the Bucegi and Leaota Mountains to the east. Its highest point is the Giuvala Pass, in Fundata commune, at around 1,260 m. Rather than a narrow valley, the corridor is a broad area of plateaus, grassy ridges and limestone gorges, with the villages of Fundata, Fundățica and Șirnea spread across the pastures in scattered farmsteads.

This was one of the busiest trade routes between Transylvania and Wallachia. At the Transylvanian end, the Saxons of Brașov built Bran Castle in the late 14th century to guard the pass and serve as a customs post. Near Podu Dâmboviței you can see the remains of Oratea Fortress, whose date is still debated. The Nedeia Munților also comes from the corridor's border past: the "fair of the two countries" held every late August on the Giuvala plateau, next to Fundata's town hall.

Don't miss
  • The view of the limestone ridge of Piatra Craiului from the Fundata plateau, around the Giuvala Pass.
  • The villages of Fundata, Fundățica and Șirnea, with farmsteads scattered across the pastures above 1,000 m.
  • The limestone cliffs at Podu Dâmboviței and the short detour to the Dâmbovicioara Gorge.
  • The descent through Moieciu to Bran, with Bran Castle at the end of the road.
  • The Nedeia Munților, the shepherds' festival on the Giuvala plateau at the end of August.
