The Galați Botanical Garden is the botanical section of the “Răsvan Angheluță” Natural Science Museum Complex, an institution of Galați County Council. According to the complex's website, it was founded in 1990, when the county took over 18 hectares from the city hall, which makes it the youngest botanical garden in the country; other sources say 1992, and the first planting is said to date from 1994. It stretches along the high bank of the Danube, close to the promenade, and is entered through the North Gate, next to the Children's Town (Orășelul Copiilor), or through the South Gate, known as the Ferry Entrance (Intrare Bac).
The garden is organised in sectors: ornamental, useful plants, rose garden, the flora and vegetation of Romania, the flora of the world and the sensory garden. The online encyclopedia gives more than 2,500 taxa, and the best-known collections are the rose garden, the citrus trees and the peonies, with chrysanthemums added in autumn.
What you can see
The rose garden has more than 5,500 roses from almost 300 varieties, with a wooden gazebo among the beds. The Japanese garden lies around a lake, where the rules forbid feeding the birds that live there. The sensory garden is designed for touch and for walking barefoot, and the “Flora and vegetation of Romania” sector covers 5.3 hectares with plants from the country's habitats.
In the complex's building, at the edge of the garden, are the natural science museum, the aquariums and the astronomical observatory, open to the same timetable.
Good to know
The tropical greenhouse, with tall palms, a panoramic lift and a viewing terrace, of about 2,500 m², was still under construction in January 2026, and I found no opening date. The garden's hours were extended from 26 August 2026, with access through the BAC Gate in the early and late hours; the details are under opening hours.
