Brașov Zoo sits in the Noua district, in the south-east of the city, right at the edge of the forest. It began in 1960 as the "Zoological Corner", and since 1992 it has run under the Local Council with its present name. In June 2012 it was closed for extension and modernisation, and when it reopened in October 2014 the area had grown from four to ten hectares and all the animal quarters had been rebuilt and enlarged. The veterinary hospital, the feed kitchen, the children's playground and the exotic building appeared then, and the aquariums were inaugurated in July 2017.
Since September 2025, Brașov Zoo has been a full member of EAZA, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. According to the press, it is the only zoo in Romania with this status. The official website speaks of more than 380 animals from about 110 species (the figure comes from its introductory text, so it may not be current).
What you can see
The paths run down among large enclosures with a forest backdrop. The official animal list includes the Siberian tiger, African lion, jaguar, spotted hyena, wolf, brown bear, Carpathian lynx, red panda, Grant's zebra, Bactrian camel and llama, meerkat, capuchins, black-and-white colobus and lemurs. The birds include the Humboldt penguin, Steller's sea eagle and snowy owl. The California sea lion and the common seal have their own pools. The Brașov Planetarium, with a 105-seat digital hall and a separate ticket, is also on the grounds.
Good to know
The exotic building, with reptiles and fish, is closed for refurbishment, so the aquariums cannot be visited for now. On the website the snow leopard is listed as "currently unavailable". The zoo is closed on Mondays, except during school holidays and on public holidays that fall on a Monday. Visitors leave through the turnstiles on the side of the large car park; prams and wheelchairs leave through the gate at the ticket office.
