Harghita-Băi
About Harghita-Băi
Harghita-Băi (Hargitafürdő in Hungarian) is a mountain resort in Harghita county, set at about 1,300 m on the south-eastern slope of the Harghita Mountains, and a component locality of the municipality of Miercurea Ciuc. The place grew up around its mineral springs and mofettes, and later around the nearby kaolin quarry, which closed in 2005. The warm mineral-water bath was closed in 1950; the mofette, where dry gas baths are taken, has survived.
Today Harghita-Băi is above all a ski resort for beginners and intermediate skiers: the runs come down through the forest straight between the resort's houses and guesthouses. In summer it is a place of fresh air and a starting point for the waymarked trails on the Harghita ridge.
What you can see
The houses and guesthouses are scattered across an open slope, surrounded by dense spruce forest, with the rounded summits of the Harghita above. The main runs, Kossuth, Miklós and Csipike, are cut through the forest and can be seen from the resort; an old two-seater chairlift also climbs through the forest.
Waymarked trails lead from the resort to the summits of the range, among them Harghita Mădăraș (1,801 m), the highest peak of the Harghita Mountains.
Good to know
The runs have different operators, and the lifts only run in the winter season, depending on snow. The mofette is only open in the warm season, roughly from May to November, depending on the weather.
