Malnaș-Băi
About Malnaș-Băi
Malnaș-Băi (Málnásfürdő in Hungarian) is a small spa in Covasna County, a village of the commune of Malnaș, on the right bank of the Olt at about 505 m, at the foot of the Baraolt and Bodoc mountains and 21 km from Sfântu Gheorghe. Several carbonated, iron-rich mineral springs, known locally as "borviz", rise on its territory.
The spa is documented from 1759. In 1873 an association of locals took charge of the springs and gases, in 1891 the first hot baths were built, and since 1904 the water of the Maria spring has been bottled. In the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century Malnaș-Băi was a meeting place for the Transylvanian nobility and middle class, with villas, a hotel and baths; after 1989 many buildings fell out of use and decayed.
What you can see
The centre of the resort is quiet, with a few old villas and newer buildings with red roofs. The Mioara and Ileana springs can be visited in the resort, and the water of the Maria spring is bottled on the spot. The treatment centre was opened in 2014 under the European "Borvíz útja" programme and was built with warm and cold pools, a sauna and mineral-water baths.
The village also has places of worship: the Reformed church, built between 1853 and 1856 beside an older bell tower, the Orthodox church of the Nativity of the Mother of God and a Roman Catholic chapel from 1969. Waymarked trails lead from the resort into the Baraolt and Bodoc mountains.
Good to know
On the site of the former Oltul hotel, bought by Covasna County Council and the commune, a training centre for spa tourism has been under construction since 2025, funded through the National Investment Company; work has progressed slowly. Some villas and buildings in the resort are derelict.
