Ipotești is the village where Mihai Eminescu spent part of his childhood. The estate was bought by the chamberlain Gheorghe Eminovici, the poet's father, in the second half of the 1840s, and in 1853 the family moved into a new house built on an older foundation. After the estate was sold to pay debts in 1878 and Gheorghe Eminovici died in 1884, the house stood empty and fell into ruin; it was pulled down in 1924. A new house was built on the spot in 1934, and the first memorial museum was opened in it in 1940. Because it did not follow the structure of the original, it was in turn demolished, and today's house was raised on the old foundation; the museum has been in it since 1979. What you see now is therefore a reconstruction, not the house of nearly two centuries ago.
The Ipotești Memorial – "Mihai Eminescu" National Centre for Studies brings together several sites: the memorial house, the family's wooden church, the Papadopol House, the poetry library and the water-lily lake in the Balsa forest. The complex is run by Botoșani County Council.
What you can see
The memorial house is visited with a guide, through the reconstructed rooms: the family salon, the father's study and the rooms of the mother and sisters. The furniture is partly original and partly period, and the Eminovici family's belongings include a carved oak Baroque desk and a walking stick the poet carried. The museum and the "Mihai Eminescu" National Poetry Library, opened in 2000, keep period photographs, manuscripts, letters and publications.
In the yard stands the family's wooden church, dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, behind which lie the graves of Gheorghe and Raluca Eminovici and of the poet's brothers, Iorgu and Nicu. The Papadopol House, a period Moldavian peasant house, was the home of the last owner of the estate and now holds the memorial's ethnography section.
Good to know
The water-lily lake in the Balsa forest, linked to the landscape of Eminescu's poetry, is a few kilometres from the memorial, on the road towards Cătămărăști Vale, and is not in the museum yard. The memorial also has accommodation and runs events, including the commemorations in January and June dedicated to the poet.
