Bukovina Village Museum
About Bukovina Village Museum
On the plateau next to the Suceava Princely Fortress, in a park in the east of the town, stands a Bukovina village assembled from buildings brought from places across the county: timber houses with shingle roofs, farm outbuildings, craft workshops, water-powered installations and, at the heart of the village, a wooden church with its bell tower. Each building was taken down at its original site and rebuilt here, and some of the interiors are furnished with traditional furniture, textiles and folk costume.
The idea of an open-air museum dates from 1958, and the first field research began in 1971, when the first farmsteads were brought in and rebuilt (among them those from Straja, Ostra and Câmpulung Moldovenesc). The project was resumed after 1990, and the museum was established by government decision in 1996. From 1998 dozens of new farmsteads and technical installations were acquired and brought here. The museum belongs to the National Museum of Bukovina and has been on the List of Historic Monuments since 2004.
What you can see
At the heart of the village stand the wooden church of the Ascension from Vama, built in 1783 and donated to the museum in 2001, rebuilt here and reconsecrated in 2009, together with its bell tower, the inn from Șaru Dornei (1928–1930) and the school from Securiceni, from the middle of the 19th century, opened to visitors in 2019. Along the lanes stand farmsteads from Straja, Rădășeni, Moldovița, Mănăstirea Humorului, Câmpulung Moldovenesc or Vicovu de Jos, with houses, barns, cellars and corn cribs.
On the stream that runs through the museum are the installations for processing water and wool: the mill from Mănăstirea Humorului, the fulling stamp for woollen cloaks and the carding mill. Crafts are shown in workshops, including the pottery workshop from Marginea and the smithy, also used as teaching workshops for children and tourists. The interiors show different types of ovens and stoves, furniture, household textiles and folk costume.
