About Muntele Mic
Muntele Mic is a mountain resort in Caraș-Severin county, set on a plateau at about 1,600 m, on the slopes of the massif of the same name, east of Caransebeș. The massif belongs to the Retezat-Godeanu group of the Southern Carpathians and borders the Țarcu, Godeanu and Retezat mountains; Muntele Mic Peak, its highest point, rises above 1,800 m. The place began to be used for tourism in the 1930s, when locals built the first chalets here for visitors.
Administratively, most of the resort lies within the commune of Turnu Ruieni, which also includes the village of Borlova, through which the access road runs. In winter Muntele Mic is one of the ski destinations of the Banat, with slopes on the bare pastures above the forest; in summer it becomes a starting point for hikes across the surrounding plateaus and ridges.
What you can see
The resort's guesthouses and chalets are scattered along the edge of an open plateau, between spruce forest and the alpine pastures that climb towards the summit. The ski area, run mostly by weSKI, has five slopes between about 1,400 and 1,800 m, served by two chairlifts and three drag lifts. The longest, Vâlsanu, descends along several variants to the bottom of the six-seat chairlift; Felix and Borlova are blue runs, suitable for beginners, and Vâlsanu and Nordica are also open for night skiing.
On the pasture above the resort stands the Heroes' Cross, and from the broad summit plateau, where a few antennas stand, the view reaches the high ridges around. In summer, hikes set off from the resort towards Țarcu Peak, towards Cuntu and towards Lake Poiana Mărului.
Good to know
The lifts run depending on snow and weather: in winters with little snow the start of the season is delayed, and the snow cannons cannot cover all the slopes. The Vâlsanu chairlift has one day a week set aside for technical maintenance, and the Isai chairlift has a separate operator. The resort is reached by the county road from Caransebeș; when the upper car park fills up, cars are left in the car parks further down, from where the ski area operator provides free transport.
