Octavian Goga Memorial Museum
About Octavian Goga Memorial Museum
The ensemble at Ciucea was the residence of the poet and politician Octavian Goga (1881–1938), who died here and is buried in the mausoleum on the hill. The estate belonged to the Boncza family. Berta Boncza (Csinszka), the widow of the Hungarian poet Ady Endre, who lived here in 1915–1917, sold it to Goga in 1920. Between 1921 and 1926 he rebuilt the castle: he kept part of the walls and the foundation of the old building, added a storey, a tower reminiscent of Italian campaniles and large verandas facing the Criș river.
Veturia Goga, the poet's wife, donated the complex to the state in 1966, and the memorial museum opened in 1967. Today the ensemble, covering 28,000 m² with nine buildings, is a historic monument (LMI code CJ-II-a-A-07568) and is run by Cluj County Council.
What the ensemble includes
The castle was the family home: on the ground floor the reception room, with five arches open to the outside, and the dining room; upstairs the music room, the library and the poet's study. The library holds more than 6,000 volumes in Romanian, French, German, Hungarian, English and Latin. The White House (Casa Albă), the second building of the courtyard, hosts an ethnographic exhibition: folk costumes, rugs, icons on glass and wood, ceramics from Vadu Crișului, Corund and Vama, and a fireplace with Corund tiles dated 1864. The Ady Endre House holds an exhibition devoted to the Hungarian poet, created together with the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest.
The mausoleum, in marble and mosaic, on the hill above the castle, was designed by the architect G. M. Cantacuzino; the Murano mosaic was made by Veturia Goga over almost two decades, and the monument was inaugurated in 1958. In the upper part of the estate there is the convent of the Nativity of the Mother of God, with a wooden church brought here in 1939 from Gălpâia, Sălaj County.

The construction works began in September 2026 and last 32 months; the first stage covers the castle and the mausoleum, on which scaffolding has been put up, and the historic objects are being moved to modular spaces.
