About Maramureș Village Museum “Mihai Dăncuș”

On Dobăieș Hill, at the edge of Sighetu Marmației, a Maramureș village has been recreated from homesteads brought from every corner of historical Maramureș: log houses with shingle roofs, porches, carved gates, barns, wells and woven fences. The museum was inaugurated in 1981, after the collecting of buildings began in 1972, and the collection is still being added to.

More than 30 homesteads are grouped by the sub-zones of Maramureș: Cosău-Mara, Lower and Middle Iza, Strâmtura, Vișeu-Borșa, the Tisza valley and the Ruscova basin. Besides the Romanian houses there is a Ukrainian dwelling, a Hungarian one and two Jewish houses, one of them fitted out as a village synagogue. The museum bears the name of Mihai Dăncuș, the director who made a major contribution to its founding.

Information verified on 28 October 2026.

Don't miss
  • The wooden church from Oncești, the oldest building in the museum, with beams dated between 1572 and 1614.
  • The carved gates and porches of the houses, grouped by the sub-zones of historical Maramureș.
  • The Ukrainian house, the Hungarian house and the two Jewish houses, one with a village synagogue.
  • The pavilion with folk costume, furniture, textiles and ceramics from the Iza Valley, Săcel, Vama, Baia Mare and Lăpuș.
  • The children's workshops: weaving, clay modelling, wood carving and painting.
