About Nakó Castle
Nakó Castle (Nákó-kastély in Hungarian) stands in the centre of the town of Sânnicolau Mare, in Piața 1 Mai. Construction began in 1864 on the orders of Count Kálmán Nakó, in the Neoclassical style, with a medieval-style tower that dominates the building. The Nakó family, of Aromanian origin (the Hungarianised name comes from Nacu), had bought the Sânnicolau estate at auction in 1781 and became one of the wealthiest noble families in the north-west of the Banat. A park with rare trees was laid out around the castle, and the building has 99 rooms.
After the First World War the family's collections disappeared: a library of 5,000 volumes, paintings, carved furniture, porcelain and letters from Ferenc Deák, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. The castle then housed agricultural schools, a tractor-drivers' school, a barracks with an arms depot, the Pioneers' House and, after 1989, a discotheque. It was restored with European funds between 2013 and 2016. Today it houses the town's House of Culture and the "Béla Bartók" Memorial Exhibition, open since 1981.
What you can see
The Neoclassical façade and the tower, seen from the square in front of the castle, among old trees and monuments. The memorial exhibition is devoted to the composer Béla Bartók, born in Sânnicolau Mare in 1881: photographs and original documents, scores, a bust and two bas-reliefs. The exhibition is not in the composer's birthplace. The castle's concert hall hosts concerts, exhibition openings and other events of the House of Culture.
