About Omu Peak
Omu Peak, at 2,507 m, is the highest point in the Bucegi Mountains. The summit is a wide, stony plateau, and the figure of 2,507 m is the one at the base of the chalet: the rock next to it rises above 2,510 m, while the survey marker behind the weather station reads 2,504.9 m, which is why sources give slightly different values. The peak lies in Bucegi Natural Park and belongs to the town of Bușteni, in Prahova County, although the borders of Prahova, Brașov and Dâmbovița counties meet right here. It can be seen from the Piatra Craiului ridge and from the Prahova Valley.
Two buildings stand on the summit. The Omu Chalet has more than a century of history: the first stone shelter was built in 1888 by the Transylvanian Carpathian Society (SKV), a wooden chalet burned down in 1911, and today's building was inaugurated on 7 August 1926 and extended in 1936–1937. Next to it is the weather station, where meteorologists work in shifts of 2–3 weeks, taking observations every 3 hours; measurements began in 1927 and the present building dates from 1962.
What you can see
The climb is the main part of the visit. From Bușteni, the trail marked with a yellow stripe passes through Poiana Coștilei and Valea Cerbului (5.5–6.5 hours), while the one with a red stripe, via Gura Diham Chalet, Poiana Izvoarelor and the Bucșoiul Mare ridge, takes 6.5–7.5 hours. From Peștera, along Obârșia Ialomiței, the walk takes 2–2.5 hours, and from Padina Chalet, via Muntele Strungile, 3.5–4 hours (red stripe). Those who take the cable car to Babele can follow the yellow stripe across the Bucegi plateau towards Omu. Up top, the wide plateau lets you wander among the rocks, with the chalet, the weather station and the panorama over the ridges.
Good to know
The peak is at high altitude: the weather changes quickly, fog and wind are frequent even in summer, and snow stays on the plateau until late spring. In winter the high-altitude trails in the Bucegi are closed (from Bușteni, between Poiana Coștilei and the chalet), and Salvamont Prahova keeps a list of closed trails. The Omu Chalet is closed in winter; the rest of the year, check with the chalet keeper that it is open before you set off.
