Piatra Craiului National Park
About Piatra Craiului National Park
The Piatra Craiului Massif is the longest and highest limestone ridge in Romania: a white wall about 25 km long, running from north-east to south-west between Zărnești and Podu Dâmboviței, on the border between Brașov and Argeș counties. Its highest point is La Om Peak, also called Piscul Baciului, at 2,238 m. The upper part of the massif was declared a reserve in 1938, and since 1990 it has been a national park of 14,766 ha, managed by Romsilva.
The park is known for the Piatra Craiului pink, a flower that grows only here, for the chamois on its cliffs and for forests that are home to bears, wolves and lynx. In 2005 it received the Council of Europe's European Diploma of Protected Areas.
What you can see
The easiest sight to reach is the Zărnești Gorge (Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor), a dry gorge with vertical walls, crossed by the forest road that climbs from Zărnești; the stretch through the gorge is suitable for children too. From the gorge, an educational trail marked with a yellow dot climbs through Poiana Curmătura to Curmătura Chalet, at the foot of the northern cliffs. This is where the ridge route begins, marked with a red dot, over Turnu Peak and Ascuțit Peak to La Om and on towards Șaua Funduri, with easy scrambling sections secured with cables. On the western side, steep trails climb from Plaiul Foii, among them La Lanțuri. In the south the park takes in the Dâmbovicioara Gorge, and the mountain villages of Măgura and Peștera have wide views of the whole ridge.
1 km from Zărnești, in the Bârsa Mare valley, the park's Visitor Centre has an interactive exhibition on the flora, fauna, caves and trails, with a 3D model of the massif.
Good to know
The ridge is a difficult, full-day route with no water sources and exposed sections. Mountain Rescue is often called out in the massif, especially on La Lanțuri and in Padinile Frumoase, where stones come loose. In spring, above 1,800 m, snow lingers for a long time and there is a risk of avalanches.
