Precista Church (Dormition of the Mother of God)
About Precista Church (Dormition of the Mother of God)
On 9 Mai Street in Bacău, in a courtyard enclosed by a painted fence, stands Precista, the oldest religious monument preserved in the town. It was part of the princely court of Bacău, the residence of Alexandru, son of Stephen the Great, between 1481 and 1496. The church was built in 1489–1490 by the same Prince Alexandru, and the Slavonic inscription on the entrance wall says that work was completed on 1 January 1491. Its patronal feast, the Dormition of the Mother of God, is held on 15 August.
The older princely house and defence tower, built in 1476–1478, were burned in 1538, during Suleiman the Magnificent's campaign against Petru Rareș. The church remained standing. It was repaired under Vasile Lupu in 1641, then altered in 1854, when a porch and a tower over the narthex were added. The restoration led by the architect George Sterian, begun in 1924, removed the additions and gave it back its form from the time of Stephen the Great.
What you can see
The rough stone wall is circled by two rows of niches with brick arches, and on the apses long brick recesses run down to the plinth. The plan is trefoil, with a widened narthex, and above the nave rises an eight-sided tower on a 12-pointed star-shaped base. The inscription to the left of the door, written in Slavonic, preserves the founder's name and the year 1491. Inside, the 17th-century iconostasis has icons painted in a Renaissance style, and the fresco murals were painted in 1984–1990.
The princely court complex also preserves the ruins of the princely house, of which the two-room cellar remains, and of the residential tower. The Tetraevangelion that Alexandru gave to the church on 23 April 1491 is now in the State Historical Museum in Moscow.
