Reșița Steam Locomotive Museum
About Reșița Steam Locomotive Museum
The Reșița Steam Locomotive Museum was founded in 1972 on the initiative of the engineer Mircea Popa, then director of the town's works, to mark a century since the first steam locomotive was built in Reșița. The locomotives are displayed in the open air, in a park on Calea Timișoarei in the Triaj district, and are listed as a historic monument.
The collection has 16 locomotives, 14 of which came out of the Reșița works. The most important is locomotive no. 2 “Resicza”, built in 1872 to a design by the engineer John Haswell for the narrow-gauge mountain line between Reșița and Secu. It is one of the first three steam locomotives made in south-eastern Europe, in 1872–1873, and was recovered from Câmpia Turzii in 1961.
In 2010 the UCM Reșița works donated the locomotives to the “Uzinele de Fier și Domeniile Reșița” Foundation, which renovated the park and reopened it in 2012, 140 years after the first locomotive.
What you can see
The “Resicza” stands on a white plinth at the entrance to the park: a small locomotive, 4.48 m long, black with red wheels and its name on a gold plate. Around it, on short lengths of track, stand the others, from small narrow-gauge engines used on forest railways and in the works to heavy mainline locomotives with tenders.
Among the narrow-gauge engines are “Principesa Elena” and the 764-series forest locomotives built in Reșița, and among the mainline ones the passenger locomotive 142.072, from 1939, and the freight locomotive 150.038. Each exhibit carries its number on the cab or on the tender.
Good to know
The exhibits are entirely in the open air, and a visit is a walk along the park paths among the locomotives.
