Roznovanu Palace
About Roznovanu Palace
Roznovanu Palace is the building that houses the Iași city hall today, on Bulevardul Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt, in the heart of the city. It was built in the second half of the 18th century and rebuilt in 1830–1833 for the boyar Iordache Ruset-Roznovanu, to plans by the architect Johann Freywald, who also designed the Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași. The style is Neoclassical, with eclectic and Baroque touches. Until 1891 it was the residence of the Rosetti-Roznovanu family, one of the most influential boyar families of Moldavia; that year the building left the family's ownership, on the initiative of the mayor Vasile Pogor.
During the First World War, between 1916 and 1918, when the government and state institutions took refuge in Iași, the palace housed ministries, and in 1918 Romania's War Council met here. From 1944 it was the seat of the city's Communist Party committee, and since 1970 it has again been the seat of the city hall.
What you can see
The façade is seen best from the boulevard and from the garden in front, with its monuments: a central pavilion with a clock and relief ornaments, arcades on the ground floor, balconies on the side wings and a mansard roof with dormer windows. Those who book an appointment can also see the interior: the monumental staircase, the hall with Corinthian marble columns, the "Vasile Pogor" hall, used today for Local Council meetings and events, and the gallery of portraits of the mayors of Iași.
Good to know
The palace is the seat of a public institution, not a museum: the interior is visited only by appointment with the city hall's secretariat.
