Vovidenia Skete and Mihail Sadoveanu Memorial House
About Vovidenia Skete and Mihail Sadoveanu Memorial House
Vovidenia Skete is a small community of monks in a clearing surrounded by fir trees, about 1 km south-east of Neamț Monastery, to which it belongs. Hermits sought out the spot as early as the 15th–16th centuries, and in the 17th century it was known as the "Slătioru" skete, after the stream that comes down from the forest. Bishop Ioanichie of Roman, who had served his novitiate here, rebuilt it in the mid-18th century with a wooden church dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God in the Temple, a feast popularly called "Vovidenia".
Today's stone church was built between 1849 and 1857 on a trefoil plan, with slender towers visible from afar. Its facades are covered with biblical scenes painted in 1968–1969 by Constantin Călinescu. The ensemble is a historic monument and part of the Vânători-Neamț monastic cultural landscape, added in 2026 to Romania's Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage.
At the entrance to the skete stands the house built in 1937 by Visarion Puiu, Metropolitan of Bukovina, who intended to spend his old age here. After he went into exile, the house was given to Mihail Sadoveanu, who had been coming to Vovidenia for decades (in 1927 he wrote "The Demon of Youth" here, in a monk's cell). The writer lived in it, mostly in summer, until his death in 1961, and called the place "the glade of quiet". The memorial museum opened in 1966.
What you can see
The house, with a broad veranda and a double staircase, keeps Sadoveanu's rooms with his furniture and belongings: the drawing room where he received guests, the study, the bedroom, family portraits, books and hunting and fishing gear. Since 1998, when the house returned to the Church, an exhibition of photographs and documents has also presented Metropolitan Visarion Puiu, who died in exile in Paris in 1964.
A few steps along the fir-lined alley lead into the skete's grounds: the large church with its colourful exterior painting, the bell tower and the chapel of the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen, built in the 1970s–1980s.
