Șoimul Ski Slope
About Șoimul Ski Slope
The Șoimul ski slope runs down the wooded hillside on the edge of the town of Gura Humorului, from the plateau at the top of the hill to the Ariniș leisure complex on the banks of the Moldova river. The slope, the chairlift, the floodlights and the snowmaking system were built between 2008 and 2010 with funding from the Ministry of Regional Development; in 2014 a second slope, Șoimul II, opened for beginners. The ski area belongs to the town and is run by the town hall.
The slopes are a few minutes from the centre of a tourist resort of national interest, so a day's skiing combines easily with a visit to the painted monasteries nearby. In summer the chairlift takes visitors up to the viewing tower and the trails on the hill.
What you can see
Șoimul I, the main slope, is 1,478 m long with a vertical drop of 283 m and is rated intermediate to difficult; it is served by a four-seater chairlift, floodlit for evening skiing and equipped with snow cannons. Up on the plateau, Șoimul II, about 550 m long, runs down the other side, towards Voroneț, and has a drag lift. The ski area reaches about 757 m.
From the chairlift you can see the whole town, with the Moldova valley and the hills of Bukovina behind. Near the top is the Șoimul viewing tower, built of wood and metal, with a playground next to it; two laid-out trails also climb up to it, past the rocks of Piatra Pinului and Piatra Șoimului.
Good to know
The ski season depends on cold and snow: the small slope usually opens first, and the main slope once the snow cannons have built up enough snow, often not until January; the season normally ends in March. In winter the slopes are closed on Mondays, and the chairlift does not run in bad weather.
