About Vatra Dornei

At a glance: Resorts and thermal baths in Vatra Dornei, Suceava County. Opening hours: daily open 24 hours. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 2½ – 3 hours. Information verified on 29 September 2026.

Vatra Dornei is Bukovina's spa resort: a small town at around 800 m above sea level, in the Dorna Depression, ringed by the Călimani, Suhard and Giumalău mountains. Treatments are based on cold carbonated mineral waters, rich in iron and lightly bicarbonated, on peat mud brought from Poiana Stampei and on mofettes that release carbon dioxide, all helped along by the mountain air. The resort specialises in cardiovascular and rheumatic conditions.

The springs were first analysed scientifically in 1805 by Dr Ignatziu Plusch, and in 1811 the Austrian administration approved the first bath house, with six tubs. From 1870 the baths belonged to the Orthodox Church Fund of Bukovina, which turned them into a resort of European standing: between 1896 and 1898 it built the pavilions of the Sentinela and Unirea springs, the Carol Hotel and the Spa Casino, in a town that had had electric light since 1895.

Don't miss
  • The restored central hall of the Spa Casino, with its gallery of arched windows, gilded stucco and chandeliers.
  • The white pavilion of the Sentinela Spring with its crenellated tower, built in 1896 behind the casino.
  • A walk along the paths of the spa park, among old firs, with the squirrels the park is known for.
  • The ride on the three-kilometre chairlift up Dealu Negru, with the Dorna Depression below you.
  • A course of carbonated baths or a session in the natural mofette at one of the treatment centres.
