Transalpina Ski Resort
About Transalpina Ski Resort
The Transalpina Ski Area (Domeniul Schiabil Transalpina), also known as Transalpina Ski Resort or the Vidra slope, lies in the north-west of Vâlcea county, in the commune of Voineasa, by Lake Vidra and ~7 km from Obârșia Lotrului, where the DN7A meets the Transalpina. The slopes were built with money from the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism and opened in December 2012. The ski area belongs to the commune of Voineasa, which leases its management to a private operator and approves the prices in the local council.
The base is at 1,350 m. From here a two-section gondola, about 2.9 km long, climbs through the forest to 1,800 m; higher up, a drag lift continues to Bora Peak, at 2,000 m. On the peaks above 2,000 m around Lake Vidra the snow usually lasts until May.
What you can see
From the gondola cabins you see the dense spruce forest below the cable and, down in the valley, Lake Vidra, with the rounded ridges of the surrounding mountains. Up top, the slopes spread over wide, treeless alpine pastures, served by a chairlift and drag lifts, with easy runs for beginners; towards the base, a red run drops through the forest along the gondola, with a black variant. The slopes have snowmaking, and at the base there is a multi-storey car park with almost 500 spaces.
In summer the gondola takes walkers and cyclists, who can bring their bikes, up to the pastures on the ridge.
Good to know
In winter the reliable access is the DN7A from Brezoi and Voineasa, a road that is cleared constantly; from Petroșani access depends on the snow, and the ridge section of the Transalpina is closed in winter. The lifts stop in strong wind, bad weather or avalanche risk, and ski passes are not refunded in these cases.
