Wood Art Museum
About Wood Art Museum
The Wood Art Museum (Muzeul „Arta Lemnului”) in Câmpulung Moldovenesc shows how the people of Bukovina used wood in almost everything they did: in their occupations and crafts, in tools and means of transport, in peasant furniture, in the architecture of the house and in sculpture. The collection numbers over 15,000 pieces and is the only ethnographic collection in Romania devoted exclusively to the culture of wood.
The museum opened on 1 June 1936, as the Câmpulung County Museum, in three rooms of the town's School of Arts and Crafts, with the schoolteacher Constantin Brăescu as its first director. The collection had started earlier, from objects gathered by the ethnographer and teacher Ion Ștefureac, and some of them were lost in the fires of the First World War.
Today the museum occupies the former prefecture of Câmpulung County, built at the end of the 19th century on Calea Transilvaniei and listed as a historic monument. The building was consolidated and restored with European funds, and the museum reopened on 1 June 2021.
What you can see
The permanent exhibition fills twelve rooms on the first floor, redesigned and opened in June 2022. Here are tools and household objects, peasant furniture, dowry chests decorated with human figures and small objects with a story: the țâncuș the head shepherd used to measure the milk at the sheepfold after the flocks went up to the mountains, butter moulds, baskets of fir staves decorated with pyrography in which food was taken to be blessed at Easter, and the pacorniță, a vessel for the tar used to grease cart wheels. The ground-floor rooms and the attic host temporary exhibitions.
In the museum garden stands Casa Lateș, a timber house from the first half of the 19th century, moved here in 1982 from its old site in the town. After restoration it reopened in 2025, with the interiors and family belongings of its former owner, Eugenia Lateș.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Groups that want a guide announce their arrival at least 24 hours in advance, and because of the layout of the rooms groups of no more than 20 people are recommended.
