Anton Scudier Central Park (Parcul Central „Anton Scudier”)
About Anton Scudier Central Park (Parcul Central „Anton Scudier”)
Anton Scudier Central Park (Parcul Central „Anton Scudier”) is one of the oldest and largest parks in the centre of Timișoara, next to the Metropolitan Cathedral. Between 1738 and 1771 the site held a cemetery where thousands of people were buried, mostly victims of the plague epidemic of 1738–1739. In the second half of the 19th century General Anton von Scudier, military commander of the Banat, ordered the remains to be moved and trees to be planted, and the place became a promenade park.
The park has had several names: Scudier Park until after the Second World War, then, in the 1950s, I. V. Stalin Park and Central Park. Its present name, Anton Scudier Central Park, dates from 2015. The redesign inaugurated in August 2019 gave it its current look, inspired by Viennese gardens, over almost 78,000 square metres.
What to see
The best-known part of the park is the Alley of Personalities, an open-air museum of bronze busts of figures linked to the city, from Charles Robert of Anjou, Prince Eugene of Savoy and John Hunyadi to mayors, doctors, writers and musicians; the alley was inaugurated in August 2009. There are also the Monument to the Romanian Soldier, in Rușchița marble, sculpted by Ion Vlad and unveiled in 1962, the busts of Barbu Ștefănescu Delavrancea (1933) and Vincențiu Babeș (1935), both listed monuments, and the bust of Alexandru Mocioni, unveiled in 2009.
Elsewhere the park has wide pedestrian paths, lawns and old trees, flower beds, fountains, white pergolas and chess tables.
Good to know
In May 2026 the City Hall signed the contract for an urban sports zone of almost 4,300 square metres in the park, with a skatepark, a pump track, climbing areas and an open-air stage. The contract runs for one year, with 5 months for design and 7 for execution; construction follows the design phase.
