The historic monuments of Romania cover the whole history of the country, from the Dacian fortresses and the Greek colonies of Dobruja to Brâncuși's ensemble at Târgu Jiu and the memorials of the 20th century. The category brings together archaeological sites, commemorative monuments, statues and the landmark buildings of the cities, but also the churches and fortresses that are heritage monuments at the same time. Many are on the UNESCO list or the national list of historic monuments and can be visited freely, in the open air; others are run as museums.

The Dacian fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains, with Sarmizegetusa Regia at their head, are the most important ancient sites; in Dobruja, Histria Citadel is the oldest city on Romanian territory. The modern era left the Endless Column and the Gate of the Kiss at Târgu Jiu, the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus carved into the cliff at the Danube Gorges, and the Sighet Memorial, in the former political prison.
