Ropemakers' Bastion
About Ropemakers' Bastion
The Ropemakers' Bastion is the first bastion of Brașov mentioned in documents, in 1416. It belongs to the south-eastern side of the town's fortifications, protected as a historic monument, and has a hexagonal shape; it was originally 10–12 m high and its gunports were made for mobile artillery pieces. The flat brick arches, whose traces are still visible in the wall, were added somewhat later.
The fires of 1461 and 1689 damaged it, the latter severely. After its rebuilding the bastion served as a materials store, and in 1794 the guild that held it built a house inside, which can still be seen above the wall today. In 1894 it was sold for 2,000 florins, and in 2006 it was renovated.
What you can see
The bastion is seen from the outside, from the path and the road that skirt it. The wall of irregular stone is pierced by brick arches, small arched windows and openings at ground level, and above the crown you glimpse the house with its tiled roof and half-timbered gable. From the slope above you can see the whole outline of the wall, with the outline of the Black Church and the rooftops of the historic centre behind.
Good to know
The bastion cannot be visited inside and has no opening hours or ticket; the visit is from the outside.
