About Amzei Church

Amzei Church stands on the street of the same name, between Calea Victoriei and Magheru Boulevard, a few steps from Amzei Square. The first church here, small and with a single tower, was built in 1807–1810 by the treasurer Amza Năescu, following the wish of his uncle, the colonel Nicolae Dărăscu, and took its builder's name. It was dedicated to Saint Nicholas; when the present church was consecrated, the Annunciation and Saints Constantine and Helena were added to its dedications.

The present building was raised between 1898 and 1901, after the old church had been pulled down, to plans by the architect Alexandru Săvulescu, and was consecrated on 21 October 1901. The style is eclectic, with Beaux-Arts influences and Neo-Romanian motifs: rows of red brick alternating with pale plaster, niches under the cornice, richly carved string courses. The plan is trefoil-shaped, with three towers: a large one above the nave and two smaller ones above the pronaos. Extensive restoration and consolidation work was completed in 2022.

Information verified on 26 October 2026.
