About National Museum of Romanian Literature

The National Museum of Romanian Literature was founded in 1957 by Dumitru Panaitescu-Perpessicius. Today's permanent exhibition, opened in 2017, is on Strada Nicolae Crețulescu 8, in an early 20th-century house where the family of General Leon Mavrocordat, head of the Royal Military House between 1909 and 1918, lived from 1906. The former premises on Bulevardul Dacia can no longer be visited.

The museum's collections exceed 300,000 items, including manuscripts by Mihai Eminescu, Vasile Alecsandri, Titu Maiorescu, I. L. Caragiale, Ion Creangă and Lucian Blaga. They make up an exhibition conceived as a "museum of the word", with content suited to children, young people and adults.

Information verified on 26 October 2026.

Don't miss
  • The exhibition organised by literary genre: poetry on the ground floor, prose and criticism on the upper floor, drama in the attic.

  • The interactive installations: holodeck, holopixel and information screens.
  • The ceilings of the salons, with gilded ornaments and painted frames.
