The Moon Church (Biserica cu Lună), dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, stands in the south-eastern corner of Piața Unirii in the New Town, next to the Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches around the square. The Orthodox of Oradea, Romanians, Serbs, Greeks and Aromanians, received permission from Emperor Joseph II in 1784, the foundation stone was laid on 9 November 1784, and the work was finished in 1790. The design is by the architect Iacob (Jakob) Eder, and the construction was led by Ioan Lins; the style is late Baroque with Neoclassical elements. The church was consecrated only on 11 June 1832. From 1920, after the Orthodox Diocese of Oradea was re-established, it was the cathedral of the diocese, until the new cathedral, "The Resurrection of the Lord", came into use.
The name comes from the 55 m tower. In 1793 the clockmaker Georg Rueppe installed in it a clock with a globe about 1 m across, painted half black and half gold. The globe makes one turn on its axis in about 28 days and shows the phase of the Moon, and the mechanism is presented as unique in Europe. It ran for a long time on stone weights; in 2005 an electric device was added to keep the pendulum moving.
What you can see
From the square you see the moon globe on the tower façade, below the clock. Inside, the iconostasis of wood painted in oil is the work of the brothers Alexandru and Arsenie Theodorovici, from Novi Sad, who worked here between 1815 and 1831, while the present wall painting, in fresco, is by Eremia Profeta (1977–1979). Above the iconostasis is a medallion with the face of Horea, the leader of the 1784 uprising. In the courtyard a small museum holds church objects.
Good to know
It is a working church, with regular services. In the autumn of 2024 work began on the roof, the façades and the joinery; we found no written confirmation that it has been completed. Climbing the tower, 161 steps, has no public schedule: it is done only with the parish's consent.
