Dormition of the Mother of God Wooden Church in Căpăt
About Dormition of the Mother of God Wooden Church in Căpăt
Căpăt is a village in Racovița commune, at the edge of the Dumbrava forest, a few kilometres from Buziaș. In the churchyard of the new church, built in 1925, stands the village's old wooden church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its exact date is not established: sources place it in the 18th century, usually in the second half, while the church inventory of 1816 gives the year 1778. The church has been moved several times: from the place called Săliște to "Izvor" because of floods, then, around 1840, to the village's present site.
The structure is of oak logs joined in the "în căței" system, with a semicircular altar apse and a small prismatic tower above the narthex. The nave, about 7.2 × 5 m, is covered by a semicylindrical vault of wide fir planks. The gently sloping three-sided roof is clad in shingle. In 1931 a storm brought down the tower and damaged the roof, and the following year the church was repaired under the auspices of the Banat Museum and declared a historic monument (LMI code TM-II-m-A-06194).
What you can see
Outside, whitewashed plastered walls with small blue windows beneath the wide shingle eaves. Inside, the vault of the nave and the iconostasis were painted by a country painter in the last quarter of the 18th century; the painting survives only in fragments, showing Christ Pantocrator, Christ before Pilate, the Kiss of Judas and the Descent from the Cross.
Good to know
The church is in an advanced state of decay. In 2020 it was given a reversible timber protective scaffold covered with a tarpaulin, funded through the Historic Monuments Stamp programme, and in 2021 the technical design for its restoration was funded; no information has been found on the start of the restoration works themselves. Because of the scaffold, the exterior may be covered, and access to the interior is not confirmed.
