About Roses Park (Parcul Rozelor)

At a glance: Parks and gardens in Timișoara, Timiș County. Ticket: Free. The visit takes ½ – 1 hours. Information verified on 8 October 2026.

Roses Park is the rose garden of Timișoara, a city that likes to call itself the "city of flowers". Its beginnings go back to 1891, when the agricultural and industrial exhibition held in Timișoara had floral displays here, made by the gardeners Wilhelm Mühle, Franz Niemetz and Benő Agátsy and admired by Emperor Franz Joseph himself. The park as it is today dates from 1929, when the landscape architect Árpád Mühle, Wilhelm's son, and Mihai Demetrovici, head of the city's horticulture service, drew up the plan of the rosarium. By 1934 it held more than 1,200 varieties of roses, and between the wars it was called the Rosarium. It has had other names too, among them Queen Marie's Garden and, under communism, the "Ștefan Plavăț" Park of Culture and Leisure.

The bombing of 1944 destroyed almost everything, and the garden was rebuilt after the war. The latest major makeover dates from 2012: more than 11,000 square metres replanted with 9,024 roses, plus hundreds of shrubs and trees, 12 rebuilt pergolas, 77 benches and 12 Roman-style vases. The park now covers about 3.7 hectares, a few steps from the Bega canal.

Don't miss
  • The diamond-shaped rose beds with box hedging, in the former interwar rosarium.
  • The 12 white wooden pergolas along the paths, with benches in the shade.
  • The Summer Theatre, the open-air amphitheatre where the Opera and Operetta Festival is held.
  • The busts of Wilhelm Mühle and Árpád Mühle, the gardeners who laid the foundations of the park, at the entrance from Borza street.
  • The green hedge arch framing the summer theatre stage, seen from the entrance.
