Sânpetru Fortified Church
About Sânpetru Fortified Church
In the centre of Sânpetru, on Strada Republicii, a bell tower with a clock and a pointed spire rises above a stone wall squeezed between houses. The settlement, called Petersberg by the Saxons, was founded in the 13th century in the Burzenland. The medieval church was pulled down after its tower had collapsed twice, and in 1794 today's Neoclassical church was built on the same spot; the new tower was added in 1817.
The fortress took shape in the 15th century, with three rows of walls. Only ruins remain of the outer and second walls, but the inner wall is preserved in full, with five towers and bastions. Built against it on the inside are the two-level storerooms for provisions, and on the south side the old school and the former town hall were built into the wall.
What you can see
The church interior is Neoclassical from the organ to the plainly decorated pillars and the altar resting on columns; the choir is at the west end, not the east as is usual. The organ was built by Johann Thois and rebuilt in 1908 by Karl Einschenk.
On the north side stands a 13th-century chapel, older than the Reformation, which about two centuries later received two defensive storeys and now looks like a tower. Its walls keep Gothic frescoes in bright colours, dated to around 1400.
