Bod Fortified Church
About Bod Fortified Church
The Evangelical church of Bod stands in the centre of the village, in the Burzenland. It belongs to the line of Saxon fortified churches, but little of its fortification survives. A Romanesque basilica of the 13th century once stood on the site; a fire destroyed it in the 15th century. The village was plundered and burnt several times between the 15th and 17th centuries, and the church and its walls were rebuilt after each disaster.
The bell tower, the oldest part of the complex, collapsed in 1790 and was rebuilt. The earthquake of 1802 brought down the church and much of the walls, and the present church went up between 1804 and 1806. The polygonal enclosure with its towers and the outer defensive wall were demolished in the 19th century (the north-western tower in 1856), leaving only fragments of wall. After the earthquake of 1977 the tower was strengthened with steel ties.
What you can see
From the medieval church only the Gothic font of 1491 survives. The plain hall has a stuccoed ceiling and galleries on three sides. At its far end the altar, with Carl Dörschlag's painting "Christ on the Mount of Olives", forms a single ensemble with the organ of 1816, built by Johann Thois. At the foot of the tower you can see the remains of a portal with a semicircular arch, and portions of the old enclosure wall remain around the churchyard.
