Monastery Church, Sighișoara
About Monastery Church, Sighișoara
The Monastery Church stands on the citadel plateau, right next to the Clock Tower, and is all that remains of Sighișoara's Dominican monastery. The monastery and its church dedicated to the Virgin Mary already existed in 1298, when they are mentioned in a letter of indulgence from Pope Boniface VIII. Between the late 15th century and 1515 the Dominicans turned the old church into a Gothic hall church with three aisles and a long, narrow choir.
After the Reformation the monks left and the monastery was secularised around the middle of the 16th century; its buildings housed schools and, for a while, the town council. The church passed to the Lutheran Saxon community and gradually became the town's main church, as it is much easier to reach than the Church on the Hill. The fire of 1676, which consumed almost the whole citadel, burned all the woodwork inside and brought down the vault of the nave, so today's church is a mix of Gothic and Baroque. The monastery buildings were demolished in 1886, and the town hall now stands on their site. The church is part of the Historic Centre of Sighișoara, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
What you can see
The late Gothic vault survives in the choir. The Baroque altar, set up a few years after the fire (1680–1681), and the parapet of the pulpit are the work of Jeremias Stranovius, a painter from Sibiu. The chalice-shaped bronze font dates from the 15th century and is the oldest piece in the church, and one door frame was carved in 1570. Several dozen Oriental carpets from the 16th to 18th centuries, donated by merchants and guilds, hang from the galleries, the walls and the inlaid pews. The organ has a Baroque case made by Johannes Fest of Sighișoara and a Romantic instrument built by the Rieger firm in 1905, with 35 stops on three manuals, restored and rededicated in 2019.
Good to know
Between 2019 and 2021 the Lutheran parish restored the roof, windows, stained glass and exterior stonework with its own money; on the south façade a section of old painting below the cornice has been preserved. The church is used for worship: the Sunday service is at 10:00, and in the cold season services are held in the prayer room fitted out inside. In summer the parish holds concerts on Fridays at 18:00, some in this church and others in the Church on the Hill.
