Reformed Church of Ghidfalău
About Reformed Church of Ghidfalău
The Reformed church of Ghidfalău (Gidófalva in Hungarian) stands on the edge of the village, on the terrace on the left bank of the Olt, surrounded by a stone wall with a gate tower. The village is first recorded in 1332, and the oldest part of the church, a Romanesque nave with narrow windows, dates from the 13th century and has kept its original dimensions.
In the early 16th century the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style, with a vaulted sanctuary closed on five sides of an octagon, and the surrounding wall was raised to protect the villagers. Tatars burned it in 1658, and an inscription above the entrance shows it was rebuilt in 1672. The porch with pillars and arches was added in 1787, and the earthquakes of 1802, 1940 and 1977 brought further repairs.
Today it is a Reformed parish church, within a complex protected as a historic monument.
What you can see
The river-stone enclosure wall, with the gate tower through which the courtyard is entered, and the bell tower with its pointed roof, a few metres from the church. Inside, medieval frescoes have been uncovered and conserved on the walls of the nave, with scenes such as the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi; according to the Romanian Wikipedia article, the west wall also shows the cycle of the legend of Saint Ladislaus. The restoration of the paintings was led by the restorer Kiss Lóránd.
