Șard Reformed Church
About Șard Reformed Church
The village of Șard (Sárd in Hungarian, Schard in German) appears in documents of 1238 as an estate of the bishops of Transylvania, and in 1295 settlers of German origin are recorded here. The church began as a Romanesque basilica with three naves and a semicircular apse, from the end of the 13th century. In the early 15th century a polygonal Gothic choir was added, supported by buttresses, and towards the end of the same century it was enclosed within a defensive wall. The community adopted the Reformed faith in the 16th century, and in 1783 the church hosted a general synod of the Transylvanian Reformed Church.
The oval enclosure has a diameter of 56–60 m and walls 6–7 m high and 1.1 m thick, built of river stone; a moat that could be filled with water once ran around it. In the 18th century the nave was shortened, the side aisles were separated from the central one by columns, and the tower took on its present, Italian-influenced appearance. The church and the enclosure wall with its gate tower are two separate monuments on the Romanian List of Historic Monuments (AB-II-m-B-00362.01 and .02).
What you can see
From the street, the first things you see are the bell tower, with its plastered walls and exposed brick at the corners, and the church's long tiled roof. In the enclosure wall, the Gothic gate tower opens to the north, now a ruin: it keeps the arch of the gate, the corners in dressed stone and the stone groove in which the portcullis slid, and on the frame of a window inside there is a carved coat of arms, attributed to the Báthory family, with the initials S.B. Some Gothic elements survive in the church, among them the triumphal arch, a tabernacle niche and window frames, and on the south side a frame dated 1690.
Good to know
The church is used for worship by a small Reformed community, and its interior has been repaired in recent years because of deterioration. The gate tower is a ruin, so the easiest part to see is the exterior. Visiting hours are not published.
