The church stands in the centre of the village of Mânăstirea, in the south of Călărași County, at the junction of DN 31 and DJ 303. It was built in 1648 by Prince Matei Basarab and his wife, Lady Elina, as the stone inscription above the door of the narthex shows. The List of Historic Monuments (code CL-II-m-A-14691) dates it 1648–1660 and counts it among the architectural monuments of national importance. It is still a parish church, dedicated to the Great Martyr Demetrius, while the second patron, St Nestor, appears in its official name.
The village takes its name from a monastery that once stood here: some historians identify it with Strugalea, the foundation of Mircea the Elder from 1409, laid waste after an Ottoman invasion, but it is not known how old it was, nor whether today's church stands on its site. Until 1810 the dedication was St Nestor; later St Demetrius moved to the front. The church was repaired under King Carol I, in 1900, and again in 1937, and the wall painting was consolidated or redone in the second half of the 20th century.
What you can see
The exterior is simple and well proportioned: a ship-type body of brick, with an enclosed porch attached at the entrance and a single octagonal tower above the narthex, rendered façades with niches and arcades, and pointed-arch windows. Inside, the vaults and the tower are covered with painting in the Byzantine style, with Gospel scenes, medallions of saints and a large carved wooden chandelier; in the porch, an inscription briefly recounts the repairs.
Good to know
A European-funded project (ROP 2014–2020, over 21 million lei) provided for restoring the painting and the wooden elements, landscaping the grounds, an annex building and architectural lighting. We found no confirmation that the works have finished; check before you travel. Near the village, at Sultana, lies the Eneolithic tell of Malu Roșu.
