About Seven Ladders Canyon

Seven Ladders Canyon (Canionul Șapte Scări) is a narrow cleft carved by the Șapte Scări stream into the Jurassic limestone of the western slope of the Piatra Mare Mountains, at about 948 m, above Dâmbul Morii in the Timiș valley between Brașov and Predeal. Over just 160 m the valley climbs 58 m in seven rock steps, 2.5 to 15 m high, which give the place its name; when the stream is swollen by rain or snowmelt, each step turns into a waterfall.

The walls are so close together that in places the sky shows only as a strip, and at the foot of the steps the water has scoured round potholes. The canyon is climbed on nine metal ladders and walkways fixed to the rock, installed in 2013 and renewed since. It is run by the Săcele municipal forestry authority, which has a ticket office at the Șapte Scări cabin, just below the entrance.

The same authority has strung a zip line of about 4 km, split into 37 sections, through the forest below the canyon, which you can ride back towards the start once you are out at the top.

Don't miss
  • The climb up nine metal ladders fixed to the walls of the gorge, with the waterfalls running right beside the steps.
  • The tallest step, about 15 m, where the stream drops into a pool carved in the rock.
  • The stretches where the limestone walls close in so tightly that the sky is just a narrow strip overhead.
  • The ride back down on the zip line of about 4 km, in 37 sections, through the spruces and over the stream.
  • Extending the hike along the yellow stripe to the Piatra Mare cabin, for a full day in the mountains.
