About Poiana Brașov

At a glance: Resorts and thermal baths in Brașov, Brașov County. Opening hours: daily open 24 hours. Ticket: Free. The visit takes 5½ – 6 hours. Information verified on 8 October 2026.

Poiana Brașov is the mountain resort of the city of Brașov, set on a wooded plateau above 1,000 m beneath the Postăvaru massif, about 12 km from the city centre. The place appears in records as early as 1427, as sheep pasture. Brașov skiers were climbing Postăvaru by the end of the 19th century, and the first ski race was held here in 1906. Until the middle of the last century the glade had only a handful of villas and chalets.

Its transformation into a resort began in 1951, with the World University Winter Games, when the first cable car up Postăvaru and a sports hotel opened. Large hotels, slopes and further lifts followed, and after modernisation in the 2010s the ski area grew to about 24 km of slopes, most of them with snow cannons.

In winter the resort lives for skiing and snowboarding; in summer it becomes a base for hiking and mountain biking on Postăvaru. The cable cars are run by Ana Teleferic and operate all year, not only during the ski season.

Don't miss
  • The ride on the 2.8 km Capra Neagră cable car up to its top station at 1,775 m.
  • The view from Postăvaru Peak (1,799 m) over Brașov, the Bârsa Land, Piatra Craiului and the Bucegi.
  • The run down Drumul Roșu, the almost 4.8 km slope that is the longest in the resort.
  • A stroll around Lake Miorița, in the centre of the resort.
  • The Old Poiana Road, the forest trail that leads down to Solomon's Rocks in Brașov.

Good to know before you go

Getting there

By car: Poiana Brașov is ~12 km south-west of Piața Sfatului, on the DN1E, the winding road that climbs from the city through the forest; from the old town head for Livada Poștei and Bulevardul Eroilor and follow the signs for Poiana. Brașov is ~170 km from Bucharest (A3 to Ploiești, then the DN1 along the Prahova Valley), ~145 km from Sibiu on the DN1 via Făgăraș and ~270 km from Cluj-Napoca via Sighișoara. From Râșnov you can drive straight up to the resort via the Valea Cetății road, without going through Brașov.

Public transport: Brașov railway station is on the main lines from Bucharest, Sibiu and Cluj; RAT Brașov buses take you from the station to the centre. Bus 20 runs to Poiana from the Livada Poștei stop, a few hundred metres from Piața Sfatului: daily from 06:00 (06:30 at weekends) until midnight, every 20–30 minutes. Tickets are sold at Livada Poștei.

Where to park

The resort has several car parks, in the centre, by the hotels and at the bottom stations of the cable cars; some are paid, others free. On snowy winter weekends they fill up early in the morning, especially those next to the slopes, and the road from Brașov gets busy. Bus 20 is a good alternative on peak days.

Fees & discounts

Entry to the resort is free. On the Postăvarul Expres gondola and the Capra Neagră and Kanzel cable cars, a single trip up costs 40 lei, a trip down 40 lei and a return 70 lei; children aged 6–12 pay 25 lei one way and 40 lei return, and under-6s ride free when accompanied by a family member. Organised groups of more than 25 people get 20% off, with a request approved in advance. A ski pass for the 2025–2026 season costs 240 lei a day for adults and 140 lei for children, 180 lei for 4 hours and 150 lei from 13:00; there are also 2–10-day passes and points cards. In summer, a trip up with a bike or paraglider costs 55 lei, and a one-day pass for cyclists 180 lei. The plastic card for passes costs 20 lei; it can be topped up but is not refundable.

Rules

On the slopes, keep to the markings and the difficulty grades; beginners have the Bradul and Stadion slopes, and there is a magic carpet at the snowpark for children under 12. Bikes go up on the cable cars only outside the ski season. The Postăvaru massif is a Natura 2000 site and home to brown bears: do not leave food or rubbish behind and do not feed the animals. The weather on the summit changes quickly, so bring warm clothes and mountain footwear even in summer.
