Bethlen András Castle in Beclean
About Bethlen András Castle in Beclean
In the centre of the town of Beclean, where the Bethlen family's four-bastion fortress stood until the 18th century, is the manor house known today as the Bethlen András Castle. Beclean was the family's Bethlen from the Middle Ages, and after the Austrian administration pulled the fortress down (after 1711–1712), its stone was reused for a new Baroque residence. The sources disagree on who built it: Romanian Wikipedia names a Count András Bethlen, while other inventories simply name it after András Bethlen (1847–1898), a politician who was minister of agriculture in 1890–1894. The design is presumed to be the work of a Cluj master builder, József Leder.
The building has an L-shaped plan, two storeys and a mansard roof, in a sober late Baroque. On the south façade, above the entrance, there is a balcony on columns whose wrought-iron railing carries András Bethlen's monogram. The complex was entered through a monumental vaulted gate with a pavilion on the upper floor, above which a coat of arms of the family can be seen, dated 1768. The manor house was ravaged in 1944 and its library burned; after nationalisation it was given other uses, and the park around it has almost entirely disappeared under buildings. Today the Beclean Agricultural Technological High School operates here.
What you can see
From the small square laid out in front of the building you can see the gate pavilion, with its semicircular arch and the school's name on the gate. Behind it, from the street side, the main body of the manor house appears, with its red roof, Baroque cornices and massive chimneys, along with a low masonry wing, still unplastered. Newer school buildings stand around it and spoil the ensemble a little.
Good to know
The manor house is not an organised tourist attraction: it is a school building, state-owned, with no visiting hours, ticket or guide. The exterior can be seen from the street and from the square in front; access to the school yard and the building depends on the agreement of the school management and on class hours. Specialist sources mention partial repairs to the interiors, but also a deteriorated state of the old wing. The same town has another one, the Bethlen Pál Castle (the former town hall, in the west of town, near the Someș), which is a different building, with two hexagonal towers and a different history.
