Kemény–Bánffy Castle in Luncani
About Kemény–Bánffy Castle in Luncani
In the village of Luncani (Aranyosgerend in Hungarian), on the bank of the Arieș, halfway between Turda and Câmpia Turzii, stands one of the oldest noble residences in the area. The estate is first recorded in 1268, when the Gerendi brothers bought it, giving it its Hungarian name. After 1597 it passed through several hands, and from 1630 it belonged to Boldizsár Kemény, father of the future Prince of Transylvania, János Kemény; the Kemény family held it until the death of the last male of the line in 1861.
The present building, with two wings meeting at a right angle, keeps essentially the form given by the works of 1702, attested by inscriptions in the cellar, and by those of the 19th century, when the corner towers were completed (1824) and a major repair was carried out (1857). By inheritance it passed to the Klebelsberg, Zichy and Bánffy families. In 1949 the Bánffy family was evicted and the castle became the seat of the collective farm; most of the outbuildings were demolished. After 1990 it was restituted and then left to an association, and its use as a social centre did not stop the decay.
What you can see
Mostly the façade: a massive two-storey building with closely set windows and, at the corner of the wings, a polygonal tower with raised stone corner quoins and a broken-pitch roof. Stone footings show through where the plaster has fallen. The roof has largely collapsed, panes and many doors are missing, and the surrounding ground is overgrown. Some of the photographs in the gallery date from 2014; the condition has worsened since, and in 2025 the ensemble was reported to have no roof.
Good to know
The castle is a listed historic monument (LMI code CJ-II-m-B-07697), but not a developed attraction: it is a ruin in private ownership, with no published visiting hours and no announced restoration work. The "România Atractivă" programme page lists it as temporarily closed and allows visits only by prior appointment, but without a verifiable official contact. The interior is dangerous (floors and roof collapsing), so the ensemble is best admired from the outside, from the village road.
