About Bánffy Castle in Sâncrai

On a rise at the edge of the village of Sâncrai, looking over the Mureș meadow towards the Trascău Mountains, a white castle with red-tiled roofs and a tall tower with a metal cap is visible from afar. Its story begins in the 19th century and is tied to the noble families Kemény and Bánffy; built on a plan symmetrical about the entrance axis, it was extended in 1890 with a wing and tower in a late-Baroque, slightly eclectic style, and later with further wings that completely changed its silhouette. The sources disagree on dates: some give 1805 for the first building, others 1903 for the final form, with the architect Lajos Pákey.

After 1947 the building became a home for children with disabilities, and the changes inside and out spoiled much of its original look. After the social centre moved out in 2005, the castle stood empty and deteriorated. Alba County Council, the owner, restored it between May 2011 and October 2014 with its own and European funds, and the ensemble is a listed historic monument (LMI code AB-II-a-B-00320).

Today it works as the Sâncrai Castle Cultural Centre: the attic is an exhibition hall, the ground floor hosts concerts and receptions, and the brick basement, from the first building phase, is used for tastings of wines from the Alba vineyards.

Information verified on 13 October 2026.
